Hi, I’m simonthescribe and I like to write about green things. This site is all about building your own greenhouse.
I live in the UK and work in a smallish garden of about a third of an acre, on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. The soil here is quite poor and I thought a greenhouse might give me the opportunity to concentrate my growing in a smaller area with fitter soil.
Although the weather is relatively mild here I would like to increase the ways that I can grow food in the garden. A couple of years ago I put up a standard ‘off the shelf’ glass greenhouse which increases our yield of peppers, tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers and other summer vegetables and herbs. It is so much more productive than my garden, per square metre, that it got me thinking about making some more greenhouses. It led me to experimenting with self-made greenhouses and growing domes, mostly using geodesics as the basic structure. The ebook available on this site describes in detail all three domes I have built.
Wherever possible I like to keep costs down (I like ‘free’) and make greenhouses with found or recycled materials. This website is here to keep a record of my experiments with food production spaces and link to other people who are working in the same area.
Please feel free to make comments on any of the posts (these are moderated and spam will be filtered out with Akismet) or send me information on how you have increased your food production with a home-made greenhouse or growing spaces. If you read the posts in the side column, describing some of my home-made greenhouses, read them from the bottom up to get them sequentially.
See you on the inside – simonthescribe.
